Two species of these coniferous trees are related to yews and are found in Georgia, Florida, and California. Only the species native to California are reported to be easily found. Trees will reach a height of 60' while the Japanese torreya or nutmeg will grow to 75' tall. Trees have a pyramidal to rounded crown with needle-like aromatic leaves that are 0.75 to 2.25" long, depending on the species. The stinking cedar, Torreya taxifolia, is native to Florida and will reach a height of 45'. Most species have separate male and female trees.
