A perennial ornamental grass originally from Abyssinia, fountain grass has narrow leaves 1/8" broad and has a graceful arching habit. Fountain grass has a bristly fruit head that is sometimes 1" long. The grass can grow to 4' tall. Some forms are a rose to copper color. In the north, fountain grass is grown as an annual.

Grains are spheroidal to ovoidal, sometimes elliptical. The exine is thin and the surface is granular to finely reticuloid. Poaceae apertures are 1-porate, with the pores usually circular to ovoidal.
