Mahonias are evergreens that are native to North America and Asia. Their height ranges from 3-10' tall and they have spiny, alternate, compound leaves. The leaves can be as long as 14" and have 9-15 leaflets. Mahonias have large yellow flower clusters that are fragrant. The fruits are bluish-black and grapelike. They are edible, but tasteless. Mahonia was used as a herbal medicine for treating psoriasis and impure blood-conditions.
