Dahlias are native to Mexico but are grown throughout the U.S. as popular garden plants. They are tuberous-rooted plants and can grow from 2-8 feet tall depending on the variety. Flowers range from 1-18 inches across and can be white, yellow, red or purple with variations. Dahlias are members of the Asteraceae family which can cause inhalant allergic reactions from the wind-borne pollen. Dahlia tubers contain insulin which was called "diabetic sugar" and was prescribed for diabetic and consumptive patients.
