Coconut Palm (Cocos)
Coconut Palm Genus Details
These palms are found in southern Florida, southern California, and Hawaii. Coconut has feather-like leaves that are up to 18 feet long with white - yellow flowers. Coconut trees can grow up to 100 feet tall and 2 feet in diameter. The fruit is the well-known coconut that contains the creamy white “meat” and the white coconut “milk”. Trees will start to flower when about 6 years old and are primarily wind-pollinated. Flowering occurs usually from summer to autumn.
Coconut Palm Allergy Info
Sufficient pollen is produced to be considered a possible cause of pollinosis, but few reported cases have been linked to this pollen. Cocos pollen was reported in Hawaii to elicit positive skin tests for 3 of 50 patients with pollinosis, even though coconut is sometimes regarded as nonallergenic.
Coconut Palm Pollen Description
The pollen grains are trichotomocolpate (all three furrows are joined at one pole). They are heteropolar, bilateral, ovoidal to cymbiform and 1-sulcate. The sexine is either tegillate with a smooth or undulating tegillum and provided with irregularly spaced pits, granules or small excrescences.
Coconut pollen grains are large- (30 x 56-64 x 40-48 micrometers).
