Cherry palms are native to the West Indies and the Florida Keys. This is a slow-growing tree with a smooth, light gray, ringed bark which bulges near the middle. Cherry palm can grow to 10-20 feet tall and has gray-green leaves which are feather shaped. These leaves are found at the top of the trunk and grow up to 7 feet long and 3 feet wide. Yellow flowers are borne in clusters 3 feet long. Fruits are orange-red in color and up to 3/4 inch wide. Traditionally the fruit was used by early settlers to fatten hogs. The sap was used to make alcoholic beverages.
