Oriental arborvitae (synonym of Thuja) is an ornmental tree from China, but has been planted in the southeast U.S. and the west coast. It is a cone-bearing, aromatic evergreen shrub that grows to 25' tall. The trees have dark reddish-brown bark and cones that are 5/8" long and egg shaped. Oriental arborvitae grows in moist soil in humid, warm temperate and subtropic regions. Chinese use the fragrant foliage for good luck at New Year celebrations.
